Brushless DC Motors- Applications and Working Principle | ELE Times

Permanent Magnet DC Motor: The permanent magnet motor uses a permanent magnet to create field flux. The construction of these types of DC motors is such that, radially magnetized permanent magnets are mounted on the inner periphery of the stator core to produce the field flux. This type of DC motors provides great starting torque and has good speed regulation.

Self-Excited DC motor: In the case of a self-excited DC motors, the field winding connects either in series or in parallel or partly in series, partly in parallel to the armature winding. Self-excited DC Motors can be classified as:

  1. Shunt-wound DC motor
  2. Series wound DC motor
  3. Compound wound DC motor

  1. Shunt Wound DC Motor: In shunt wound DC motors, the field is connected in parallel (shunt) with the armature windings. These motors offer great speed regulation due to the fact that the shunt field is excited separately from the armature windings, which also offers simplified reversing controls.
  2. Series Wound DC Motor: In a series wound DC motor, the entire armature current flows through the field winding as it connects in series to the armature winding.
  3.  Compound Wound DC Motor: The compound wound self-excited DC motor essentially contains the field winding connected both in series and in parallel to the armature winding.

Short Shunt DC Motor: In the short shunt type compound wound DC motor, the shunt field winding is only parallel to the armature winding not the series field winding.

Long Shunt DC Motor: In the long shunt type compounded wound DC motor, the shunt field winding is parallel to both the armature winding and the series field winding.

The many brushless DC motor benefits make using the motor in a broad range of applications an advantage. These include speeds control, high rpm, high torque, and silent operation. Based on these benefits, the application of brushless DC motors can be divided into the following.

Single Speed Applications: BLDC motors provide a flat speed operation. That means the motor maintains speed even when the load varies. These motors are, therefore, suitable for use where the load varies but the speed should not. The flat speed curve of BL motors results from its construction and electronic commutation.

Variable Speed Applications: Brushless DC motor use does not only fit single speed applications. The motor also suits situations where the rpm should vary. Induction motors would be a good choice. However, they would require an external controller which would make the set up too costly.

Low Noise Applications: BLDC motors are low-noise machines and the best for applications where systems or appliances must operate silently. These include electronic appliances and facilities such as health clinics.

Precision Controlled Systems: In some applications, the precise control of movement is required. The working of brushless DC motor parts and electronic control allow usage in such situations. These include robotics, RC vehicles, and more.

What Brushless DC Motors Used are: Having discussed the general brushless DC motor applications, we can take a look at the specific use of the device in appliances and systems.

Brushless DC Motor in Car Parts: One of the sectors where the BLDC motor is becoming increasingly popular is the automotive industry. The motor is being used in major vehicle parts such as fans, window elevators, and HVAC motors. When used in these components, BLDC motors perform exceptionally well, and for a long time due to their higher durability.

Brushless DC Motor for Fan: The fans for cooling and heating appliances commonly use brushless motors. The electronic control of these motors allows manufacturers to include features such as speed variation, programmable operation, and remote communication. BL motors are also quiet devices, which makes them suitable for use in fans where noise is unwanted.

Brushless DC Motor for Robot: With the advancement of robot technology, BLDC motors have become the most preferred type of drive and holding device. There are many reasons for their use, such as efficiency, low-heat operation, and compact construction. But the most important advantage for the application is the precise control that brushless motors are capable of, which helps produce accurate robotic systems and devices.

Brushless DC Motor for Electric Bike: In an e-bike, a BLDC motor is usually affixed to the wheel hub. The rotor then forms part of the wheel, rotating along with it. In turn, the stator is typically built into the wheel hub. The brushless DC motor commutation that requires no physical brushes is one of the reasons for its suitability. The high torque too and efficiency, which are necessary to propel the bike.

Brushless DC Motor for Drone: One of the most popular brushless DC motor applications is in the making of drones. A drone uses several rotors, each with own electronic circuit. These must be controlled separately to achieve ascent, decent, and direction change. BL motors allow that with ease. A brushless DC motor for drone must also be lightweight and small enough to avoid introducing too much weight. Compactness is one of the BL motor characteristics.

Brushless DC Motor for Lathe: BL motors are common in power tools such as lathes, where they offer the advantage of low weight and high efficiency. They also generate higher levels of torque in high rpm, a major requirement for lathe operation.

Brushless DC Motor for Golf Cart: Brushless motors are popularly used to propel small vehicles such as golf carts. There are many reasons for the application. One of the most important is the motor’s high efficiency, which makes it save energy. The reduced maintenance requirements and high torque-to-weight ratio also makes a BL motor suit golf carts.

Brushless DC Motor in Computers: Brushless motors are also commonly used in computers. Examples include use in hard disks, CD-ROM drives, and the cooling fans of computers. One of the advantages of BLDC motors when used in a computer is low noise. The motor is also a zero-maintenance device, which means a user will not need to change parts to keep the motor going.
